Stable Door Sales Rise 570% in Three Years as Homeowners Return to Timber
Stable door sales across the UK have increased by 570 per cent over the past three years, according to new data released by Nottingham-based timber specialist DavesDoors.co.uk.
The findings, published in the company’s 2026 UK Timber & Stable Door Trends Report, suggest that what was once considered a niche rural product has moved firmly into the mainstream. Stable doors now account for approximately one third of total sales.
The report shows that while overall business growth has risen sevenfold during the same period, stable doors have emerged as one of the fastest-expanding categories within the timber external door market.
Glazed stable doors are proving particularly popular, significantly outperforming solid designs. The ability to open the top half independently while maintaining security below appears to be a decisive factor for buyers seeking greater ventilation control without compromising safety.
David Corner, founder of DavesDoors.co.uk, said the scale of change had surprised even experienced operators in the sector.
“Three years ago stable doors represented a small share of our overall sales. Today they account for around one in three purchases. Homeowners are increasingly drawn to the flexibility they offer, as well as the character and longevity associated with traditional timber construction.”
Mr Corner, a cabinet maker and carpenter with more than 25 years’ experience in handcrafted furniture and joinery, believes the renewed interest in timber reflects a deeper appreciation for material quality.
“When you work with timber every day, you understand its strengths. Properly engineered wood is repairable, adaptable and capable of lasting decades. It ages with character rather than degrading. That matters to homeowners who see a front door as part of the fabric of their property, not a disposable fitting.”
The data suggests a wider return to timber front doors. Growth has been recorded across oak and hardwood categories, though none at the same pace as stable designs.
Average order values across timber external doors sit between £700 and £800, placing the category firmly within the considered home improvement market rather than the budget replacement sector.
Industry observers suggest several factors are contributing to the trend. Rising interest in cottage and period aesthetics has coincided with increased awareness of sustainability. FSC-certified timber is renewable, stores carbon throughout its lifecycle and can be repaired or refinished rather than replaced outright. In contrast to petroleum-based alternatives, responsibly sourced timber is widely regarded as a lower-impact material when maintained correctly.
The report concludes that stable doors are likely to remain one of the strongest performing timber categories throughout 2026, with glazed configurations continuing to lead demand.
